Merilyn P. Wilber, 51, of Little Compton, RI passed away on December 12, 2015 at home surrounded by her family following a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was the wife of Peter C. Medeiros (x25 years), the daughter of Paul and Frances Wilber, and the mother of Alexandra S. Medeiros (19) and Emily W. Medeiros (16), all of Little Compton.
Merilyn was born in Natick, MA. She grew up and attended the Barrington, RI schools during which she was an AFS one year foreign exchange student to Bolivia. Merilyn enthusiastically swam for the Barrington swim teams and she worked as a lifeguard for a variety of RI beaches including S. Shore and Briggs Beach, Little Compton. She earned her undergraduate degree from Ohio Wesleyan University, Ohio and spent one college year studying in Segovia, Spain. Merilyn earned her master’s degree from the University of RI. She taught Spanish for 25 years at St. George’s School, Middletown, RI and more recently taught Spanish at Salve Regina University, Newport, RI. She was highly regarded by students and faculty and remained in touch with numerous students over the years. She travelled to Spain frequently to further her Spanish language and cultural expertise. Additionally, Merilyn taught English one year in Soria, Spain while her daughters were immersed in the Spanish schools and culture.
Merilyn enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling, cooking, spending time at the beach, watching Patriot’s football games, and watching her girls’ sports games. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially during holidays and summer cook-outs. Her warm smile, infectious laugh, and big heart were her trademarks and she will be sadly missed by all.
Additional survivors include her three sisters: Marjorie G. Lint (husband, John), COL (R) Jennifer Teile Wilber (son, Brian), and Deborah L. Wilber, two uncles: Horace B. Wildes, Glenn K. Wildes, one aunt Mildred Livecchi, and many cousins and friends here and in Spain.
